…Because he would have had a mountain more evidence against him in the Kitzmiller v Dover trial.

Michael Behe, Intelligent Design Creationist Extraordinaire, started an Amazon.com blog to answer criticisms of his recent book, The Edge of Evolution. Read More…

Could Neanderthals Talk?

posted in Evolution, Genetics, Science Comments Off

Humans are the only species, that we know of, that has been capable of verbal language, until perhaps now. Okay, just so we know, I’m setting the bar pretty high so that Dolphins don’t make the cut, but maybe our closest extinct relative could have made it over that bar. Yes, maybe Neanderthals had language. Read More…

Sociologique!

Many of you may have heard of the legendary Ariela. She’s been on my show a couple times, she’s been referenced in several blog posts, and she followed me to Madison Wisconsin. She’s not a stalker*, she’s my lady-love! And finally, after hours on hold with tech support, only to work out the bugs on my own, her new sociology blog: Sociologique, is up! I came up with her subtile and put it in without her noticing:

Ravings of a Mozart-lovin’ Sociology-studyin’ White-lookin’ Mexican Iconoclast

meme: #1 on Google

(Blog meme infected me from Pharyngula)
What are five search phrases that put my website in the #1 slot on Google?

I found most of these by trial-and-error, however, the Steve-O search was found by checking my website statistics for weird ones that popped out.

Tuesday Madness: You can’t ban me, I quit!

Previously on a Monday Madness post, I wrote about a guy named Steve Ostrowski. He had gotten himself in a bit of trouble with blackmailing student government officers at UC Davis. A month ago he got himself into trouble again, this time with the Davis Wiki. But that’s not noteworthy enough for a post. No, last week he topped himself. It’s time for some Monday Madness. New Evil Empire episode II

posted in Random, Science Fiction 2 Comments

Previously, I suggested that the conduct of the Apple computer company with regard to its iPhones may qualify it as the new evil empire. (Whereas Microsoft was the first.) Hackers had gleefully unlocked their new $499 iPhones from the AT&T deal and were able to install third-party programs, which irked Apple - they were hoping to make tons of money on the side with their exclusive AT&T deal. So with the release of its 1.1.1 firmware patch, Apple “bricked” those phones - turning them into expensive paperweights. That was round 2. Get ready for round 3 - the rebel hackers are fighting back.

I’m going to the Freedom From Religion Foundation convention this weekend, which is being held here in Madison. The Freedom From Religion Foundation is based in Madison, and some of the speakers at this weekend’s event include Christopher Hitchens, and Julia Sweeney. I’ve never been to one of these, so I wonder what it will be like? Read More…

Obama in Madison

posted in Politics Comments Off

Illinois isn’t that far away from where I am, but it still seems really cool that Senator Barack Obama from Illinois is making a visit next Monday. He’ll be at the Monona Terrace Convention Center, doors open at 10:30 AM and the event begins at 11:00.

I submitted an interview request for a tiny 10 minute slice of his time during his visit, to ask him a few questions about his approach to science and science policy. I’ll see if I hear back from them. It’s short notice, but also a short interview, and a timely discussion.

If anyone has an idea for a particular question they think would be good to ask, there’s plenty of room in the comments thread!

Quynh!

posted in Health, Media, Personal, Random Comments Off

Last week, when I went to the Speaking Science 2.0 talk in Minneapolis, I skipped the after party to go see Quynh Nguyen. She’s a friend of mine from Davis, who I met through the Chemistry Club @ UC Davis, and who also wrote for The Aggie for a year. While I was watching one of PZ eight arms getting hacked off by Matt Nisbet, and Greg Laden drilling holes in Chris Mooney’s head (and other mayhem - post coming soon), Ariela was hanging out with Quynh and her boyfriend Jeff, and they swung by to pick me up afterwards.
