Sang like a bird!
Posted in Agriculture, Biology, Education, Food, Genetics, Piling it Higher and Deeper By Karl Haro von Mogel.I just had my voice recorded today for one of the video projects I’m working on with my adviser, and it went off without a hitch. Apparently I’m the first [client] to have used the new sound studio closet in the Teacher Education building. In a few weeks, we should have a complete video, to show all the curious people out there how to pollinate corn. No, really.
Besides my research on a gene in sweet corn, I’m making two series’ of videos. One will be a series of videos on how to make controlled pollinations for various types of flowering plants. (Maize, small grains, lilies, peppers and tomatoes, trees, roses…) These are intended for college and high school students who are interested in crossing plants, or are taking a class related to it.Thus, they’re loaded with terminology the whet the scientific appetite, and I’m narrating them.
The second series of videos is intended to get people interested in plant breeding. Both students trying to decide what to pursue as a career, and members of the general public that might be interested in what goes into creating the foods that they eat, and some of the other things that we use plants for (such as biofuels, for example). These films are intended for a wide audience. We’re already done with the first of these videos.
There’s nothing to see yet - we’re still in the process of getting the website ready, but we’re planning on even making lo-res versions that people can watch on their video iPods. It’s all very cool. My adviser has been really busy, so writing the scripts and doing the voice has been my province. Which is cool, because I’ve been training myself to do this. When I was done recording the narration, the media-guy Clark said I was faster than some of the professionals. I wonder how many takes Leonard Nimoy needed to get it right?
