Last week I posted my interview with Sheril Kirshenbaum, and we joked about what’s the coolest marine invertebrate - Cephalopods or Echinoderms? (Squids and such or Sea Cucumbers, Starfish, etc?) Well it turns out it’s the big Buzz in the Blogosphere at scienceblogs.com. (Mind nod to Sheril)

Invertebrate Wars

the buzz in the blogosphere

03.23.2008

Who knew spineless creatures could cause such a stir? On Thursday, the Intersection’s Sheril Kirshenbaum claimed that sea cucumbers “would eat squid for breakfast,” prompting a lively debate among sciblings over the “coolest” class of marine invertebrates.

Me, being strictly neutral in this conflict would simply like to point out that marine invertebrates are merely an insignificant offshot of a dependent class of organisms called animals. The real awesomeness is in plants. I mean, just look at all this awesomeness with mere maize mutants!

That’s right, it’s time that we focus on the REAL debate that’s worth debating. Monocots versus Dicots. On one hand, you have the entirety of the grains and grasses, bamboo, and palms. On the other hand, you have fleshy fruits, trees, squash, and everything else. It’s the battle of the other 90% of the biomass! (Vascular plants only, and gymnosperms need not apply.) We’ve got to do something about this zoocentric bias.

The first couple salvos have been fired at The Intersection and A Blog Around the Clock, all eyes are on Davy Jones and how he’ll respond.
